在系列電影《暮光》里，好多主要的情節(jié)似乎都與prom有關(guān)。其他不少青春美劇里也時(shí)常會(huì)出現(xiàn)大家穿著正裝參加prom的情節(jié)。這個(gè)prom到底是什么樣的一個(gè)活動(dòng)呢？

In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held near the end of the senior year. High school juniors attending the prom may call it Junior Prom while high school seniors may call it Senior Prom. In practice this may be a combined junior/senior dance.
在美國(guó)和加拿大，prom（promenade的簡(jiǎn)寫形式）指為中學(xué)生舉辦的正式舞會(huì)或聚會(huì)，通常在高中學(xué)年即將結(jié)束時(shí)舉行，（所以很多地方都譯作“畢業(yè)舞會(huì)”）。有初中生參加的叫Junior Prom，高中生的則叫Senior Prom。不過(guò)在具體組織的時(shí)候，這種舞會(huì)通常既有初中生也有高中生。
At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students chosen in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and are usually given to seniors. Juniors may also be honored, but would be called "Prom Prince" or "Prom Princess".
在畢業(yè)舞會(huì)上，還會(huì)揭曉Prom Queen（舞會(huì)王后）和Prom King（舞會(huì)之王）的獲選者。這兩個(gè)榮譽(yù)稱號(hào)的獲得者是在畢業(yè)舞會(huì)之前在全校范圍內(nèi)投票選出的，獲選者多是高中學(xué)生。初中學(xué)生也有獲選的機(jī)會(huì)，不過(guò)稱號(hào)會(huì)改為Prom Prince（舞會(huì)王子）或Prom Princess（舞會(huì)公主）。
The British synonym for the North American event would be Leavers' Ball, Leavers' Dinner, Formal or, informally, Leavers' Do.
在英國(guó)英語(yǔ)中，一般會(huì)用Leavers' Ball、Leavers' Dinner、Formal或者更口語(yǔ)化的Leavers' Do來(lái)表示prom，即“畢業(yè)舞會(huì)”。
