A lack of firepower could be a major worry for Germany as they embark on their latest bid to win their first World Cup since 1990.

Former international Dietmar Hamann, our Sony expert following the three-times world champions in Brazil, fears that his home nation might struggle if they fall behind in matches.

The veteran Miroslav Klose was the only striker included in manager Joachim Low’s 23-man squad announced on Monday, although Lukas Podolski, Andre Schurrle and Thomas Muller could also provide goals from midfield.

“I don’t think Germany have a big weakness, but not having a centre-forward in form at the moment is probably the area which, if they had one you’d say they have a much better chance of winning the title,” said Hamann.

“If you’ve got a recognised goalscorer in your side it gives you not only options but it gives you belief as well. And at times I’m not sure whether there’s enough belief in the team to overturn a one or two-goal deficit because goals have been pretty hard to come by in certain games.”

Hamann also has some concerns for players over 30 in the squad. “If you’re not the best team in keeping possession, I think you need a young team, I think that certainly helps,” he said.

“I’d be very careful picking players over 30 if I don’t have to and I think that especially in midfield and forward positions it helps to have youth and have legs in your squad.”
