GUANGZHOU - Sewage discharged by an aquatic farm in south China's Guangdong province has polluted the water source of a local water plant, disrupting the water supply of 50,000 residents on Saturday, local authorities said Sunday.

Gaoming district in the city of Foshan has taken measures to make up the losses in supply, reducing the number of affected residents to 1,000 by Sunday, said a spokesman with the district government.

Workers at the Heshui Water Plant found the stream was polluted on Saturday, said the spokesman.

The plant immediately suspended drawing water from the stream.

Initial Investigations showed the aquatic farm, Yangguangkenong, located 5 kilometers upstream of the plant, had discharged waste water into the stream.

Further investigations are under way.
