ACCRA - The death toll in Wednesday night's gory road crash rose to 63 by late Thursday, a medical officer at the Kintampo Government Hospital told local media.

According to him, more passengers, including pregnant women and children brought to the hospital had died.

Some of the injured have been transferred to various hospitals as the Kintampo government Hospital is running out of capacity and logistics needed to handle some of the cases.

The officer, who did not disclose his identity, said six people with series of fractures on their arms and legs and serious head injuries had been transferred to the Holy Family Hospital at Techiman.

The government has airlifted some of the injured to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, 270 km north of the capital, while some of those in critical conditions have been transferred to hospitals in Sunyani, the Brong-Ahafo Regional capital, about 400 km north of the national capital.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport Fifi Kwetey and the Inspector General of Police John Kudalor visited both the crash site and the injured on admission.

A Metro Mass Transit (MMT) coach traveling from Kumasi to Tamale collided head-on with a cargo truck conveying boxes of tomatoes from Burkina Faso to Accra Wednesday night.

The drivers of both vehicles were among those who were killed in the fatal crash.
