ISLAMABAD - At least 12 people were killed and 25 others injured when twin blasts hit two mosques in Pakistan's northwest Malakand district on Friday afternoon, local media reported.

Both blasts took place almost simultaneously at about 2:00 pm local time in Bazdara Bala area of Malakand, a town located in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Local paramilitary troops confirmed that the first blast happened before Friday prayer and the second took place when people were offering prayer in another mosque in the same area.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital and several of them were in critical condition.

Nature of blasts has not been determined yet.

Police cordoned off the area and an investigation into the incident has been kicked off.
