Indonesia urges OIC to help end violence in Syria

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has urged the Organization of Islamic Conference to be united to help stop violence and killing against civilians in Syria, a statement from Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said on the side line of OIC meeting in Mecca that OIC member countries should prepare to send troops to Syria if it was needed by the United Nations.

"OIC must deliver a group message to the UN security council to take a step to immediately stop violence in Syria. Once it is needed, it can use the article 7 of the UN charter," he said in the statement.

"The important thing for the OIC is that the termination of the violence and killing against civilians. Political transition is not an urgent thing now, and it can be done after peace in Syria is achieved,"said Marty.

The minister added that Indonesia supports OIC in addressing issues of Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar and Palestine.

"The OIC should take a concrete and constructive step to address various problem of Muslims," he said.
