China urges restraint on Korean Peninsula

SEOUL: China said Monday that it does not hope to see a reversal of the hard-won momentum of?relaxation of tension on the Korean Peninsula.

Chinese President Hu Jintao met with?Republic of Korea President Lee Myung-bak Monday morning on the sidelines of the?Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul.

According to Chinese delegation spokesman Qin Gang, Hu Jintao emphasized in the meeting that recently, there have been some new developments in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, which have drawn serious attention of the international community.

China has maintained close communications with relevant parties, including the ROK, said Hu.

"At present, the situation on the Korean Peninsula is very complicated and sensitive. We do not hope to see a reversal of the hard-won momentum of relaxation of tension on the Peninsula," said Hu.

All parties should remain calm and exercise restraint, avoid aggravation of tension and, on this basis, seek an appropriate solution, said the president.

"China is ready to work with other parties and continue to make active efforts towards peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula."
