UN headquarters in Haiti seriously damaged by quake

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations said Tuesday the headquarters of the UN mission in Haiti "sustained serious damage" after a a major earthquake hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

"A large number of personnel remains unaccounted for," a statement issued here said.

The UN mission, known as the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), was established on June 1, 2004 by the UN Security Council.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which struck at 4:53 p.m. (2153 GMT), was quickly followed by a tsunami and two aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 respectively.
