STARTING ROTATION
Lester (5-0), who began the season in Boston's minor league farm system,
looks to have found a home in the Red Sox starting rotation.
The 22-year-old lefthander produced another gem for the Fenway faithful,
surrendering only a second inning single to Mark Teahen in eight sparkling
innings to remain unbeaten in his major league career.
Jonathan Papelbon came on in the ninth to record the final three outs and
notch his 28th save of the season.
With one out in the fifth, Jason Varitek doubled and then scored on
Gonzalez's line single up the middle.
The win capped off a milestone night for Varitek, who played his 991st game
in Red Sox uniform to surpass the team record set by Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk.
"I've just been very, very fortunate to be in one place for a long time, and
I've had a lot of health, and those things have kept me on the field," said
Varitek.
In Toronto, Hank Blalock and Brad Wilkerson each cracked two-run singles to
key a five-run eighth inning as the Texas Rangers rallied past the Blue Jays 5-2
to halt a three-game losing streak.
Trailing 2-0, the Rangers did all their damage with an eighth inning burst
triggered by a two out RBI single from Mark Teixeira.
The Toronto bullpen quickly allowed the game to unravel as the Rangers sent
10 men to the plate in the inning, scoring five runs on six
hits.
