The tournament website reported on Thursday the World No 1 player
particularly wants to win the trophy this year, after he lost his fierce contest
with David Howell last year.
Woods narrowly missed out on the international "champion of champions" title
at the inaugural HSBC Champions last November, finishing second to England's
Howell.
Howell finished three shots ahead of Woods in a world class field that
included Vijay Singh, Colin Montgomerie, Michael Campbell and local favourite,
Zhang Lian-Wei.
The HSBC Champions has the largest prize fund in Asia, worth US$5 million.
the winners of the four leading golf tours and top 50 players on the Official
World Rankings qualify. The European Tour, Asian Tour, the PGA Tour of
Australasia, the Sunshine (Southern Africa) Tour and China Golf Association
sanction the event.
Chang Xiao Ning, Deputy Chairman and Secretary General of the Chinese Golf
Association said, “We are pleased to have Tiger Woods take part in the 2006 HSBC
Champions. We believe that his participation will bring the world's attention to
Chinese golf. CGA will also select the top Chinese players for the tournament
and ensure that they give it their best shot.”
