On November 17 in an ordinary sculpture studio in Huiji District, reporters saw that the bust of President Obama was essentially completed, and Zhang Hui, the 22-year-old creator of the piece, was doing final touch-up work. Zhang graduated from the Fine Arts School at Northeast Normal University in 2009, and is learning clay sculpture from a folk arts and crafts master named Wang Ling.
Zhang said that the sculpture is 60cm high and 35cm wide, and was made using solely mud from the Yellow River. It weighs about 28 kilograms. Zhang said that when she learned that President Obama would visit China, she wanted to express in her own way the wish of Chinese youth for everlasting friendship between Chinese and U.S. people, and for President Obama to get the chance to visit Henan Province to experience the ancient culture of central China.
