Hospital apologizes for 'dead' baby error

An investigation is underway after a new-born baby pronounced dead by hospital staff was later found alive in a plastic bag. Four medical workers have been suspended in South China's Guangdong province for mistakenly diagnosing a stillbirth and disposing of a baby that was alive, according to reports. The incident happened on Oct 26 at the Nanhai Red Cross Hospital in Foshan city. Liu Dongmei, who was eight months pregnant, was rushed to hospital with internal bleeding and stomach pain. During the emergency birth the baby was born, but was believed not be breathing or crying and the skin had turned purple. The nurses assumed the baby was dead before bagging and discarding it in a restroom. A nurse told the father Wang Haizhang the dead baby was a boy. But thirty minutes later other family members found the baby boy alive in the restroom. The baby is still receiving treatment at the hospital. [Photo/CFP]
