The province's GPD in 2012 was 1.21 trillion yuan ($197.92 billion), up 10.1 percent from the previous year, with value added output of primary industries worth 69.79 billion yuan, for an increase of 6 percent, accounting for 5.8 percent of the GDP. Secondary industry’s value added output totaled 700.91 billion yuan, up 10.9 percent, and accounting for 57.8 percent of the total. Tertiary industries saw their value added output reach 440.59 billion yuan, for an increase of 9.5 percent, or 36.4 percent of the total. Per capita GDP for 2012 amounted to 33,628 yuan.

The fiscal revenue exceeded the quota in 2012, ensuring funding for priority areas and contributing to the whole economic development. Its fiscal revenue reached 265.04 billion yuan in 2012, up by 17.2 percent over last year, among which the general budget totaled 151.64 billion yuan, increasing by 25 percent.

Agriculture

Shanxi gave top priority to agriculture and rural areas, in 2012, to balance urban and rural development and saw with significant improvements in both areas. It also came up with policies to benefit farmers and agriculture more, with 10 support policies for coarse cereals, greenhouse vegetables, large breeding, and other areas. It also increased agricultural infrastructure and technologies, and increased agricultural capacity overall, so that its total grain output was 12.74 billion kilograms, up 6.8 percent year-on-year for a record high.

Industries

That year, Shanxi increased its new industrialization pace through integrated development of coal power, coke, coal chemicals, and coal machinery, while at the same time pushing the development of emerging industries in advanced equipment manufacturing, modern coal chemicals, new materials, and feature foods. Sales revenue of advanced equipment manufacturing reached 141.8 billion yuan, for 2012.

It had 3,716 industrial enterprises with annual sales of 20 million yuan, and main business income of 1.78 trillion yuan in total, for a 9.7-percent increase from the previous year. Taxes amounted to 177 billion yuan, down 18.3 percent, and profits, 80.65 billion yuan, a decrease of 29.9 percent from the previous year.

Infrastructure construction

Shanxi improved its infrastructure in 2012 to support development, with a greater effort in transportation, for example, on the Datong-Xi’an transport line and railway construction in its south central region. Other projects included construction work at the Lvliang, Linfen, and Mount Wutai airports, and adding 1,000 kilometers of expressways, to bring the total amount of expressways above 5,000 kilometers. That year, fixed investment in society was 917.63 billion yuan, up 24.5 percent year-on-year.

Domestic and foreign trade

Shanxi province worked hard to increase consumer spending through policies, in 2012, covering the sale of home appliances and agricultural machinery in the countryside, along with furniture and building materials. It also promoted commodity circulation and the link between farmers and supermarkets, and developed other types of business, such as e-business. Urban and rural consumer spending continued to grow, with total retail sales of consumer goods reaching 437.58 billion yuan, for the year, an increase of 16 percent year-on-year. It also did its best to expand overseas market demand and had total foreign trade worth $15.04 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2 percent.

Livelihood

The province tried harder to benefit its people in 2012 by improving their lives, and saw 511,000 new jobs in urban area, while 432,000 rural laborers got transferred to other work. It also began construction work on 409,000 housing units and completed 180,000. Urban per capita incomes reached 20,412 yuan, in 2012, up 12.6 percent, while rural per capita incomes reached 6,357 yuan, up 13.5 percent from the previous year.
