Part of Romance of the West Chamber, one of the most famous Chinese dramatic works written in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), will be performed as a Kunqu opera at the China Kunqu Opera Museum in Suzhou of Jiangsu province during the National Day holiday.
The week-long performance starts at 2 pm on October 6.
The opera will tell the part of Romance of the West Chamber named “Jiaqi,” meaning “good time.” In this part, the young scholar Zhang Sheng becomes lovesick for Cui Yingying. He became seriously sick after Cui scolded him for some reason. To save his life and their love, Cui dates Zhang despite the risk of social criticism and punishment.
Two other operas will also be performed at the museum during the holiday.
