"Guian New Area is an important place of origin of big data development in Southwest China's Guizhou province and the area's establishment has been linked closely to the industry," said Sun Dengfeng, director of the Guian New Area Administrative Committee on March 10.

Sun was speaking at a group interview with the Guizhou National People's Congress (NPC) deputies, part of the 2018 NPC and Chinese Peoplp's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Annual Legislative and Political Advisory Sessions underway in Beijing from March 3 to 20.

Approved by the State Council on January 2014, Guian New Area is planned to cover an area of 1,795 square kilometers and to maintain a focus on high-end, green and integrated industries, Sun said.

Over the past years, the area has built an image of a new advanced and unique green city and positioned itself for big data development in Guizhou. It is now a key area of China's big data centers in the South and the national big data experimental zones, he added.

The area's rapid development of big data is apparent as it has attracted a number of technology giants from home and abroad, including Apple, Qualcomm, Huawei, Tencent, Foxconn and IBM, Sun said.

In addition, the area has also nurtured several quality big data enterprises such as Baishan Cloud Co Ltd, the Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Guian New Area Biological Big Data Center and the FAST big data R&D center, according to Sun.
