Qianming Temple is an important place for Buddhism activities in Guiyang city. It is one of the earliest 142 key temples in China granted by the State Council.
The temple was listed as the key temple in the Han-Tibetan area by the State Religious Affairs Bureau in 1983 and opened to the public. It was identified as a historical and cultural site protected by Guiyang city and Guizhou province in the years of 1981 and 1985 respectively.
Qianming Temple was built in late Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the 36th year ruled by Emperor Qianlong (AD 1771). The Temple was occupied by a villager named Shu Zhuping due to the war leading to displaced monks during the reign of Emperor Xian Feng and Emperor Tong Zhi and then changed its name into “Shu’s ancestral hall”.
The temple was taken back by Guizhou Buddhist Association and restored its original name in the year of 20 of the Republic of China (AD 1931). Master Guang Miao was the abbot of the temple from 1933 to 1946 during which the temple attracted a great number of worshippers and pilgrims.
The temple was destroyed and the monks were force to leave during the Cultural Revolution. Nearly millions of yuan was allocated by Guiyang Municipal People’s Government to restore the temple in 1983. The sutra depository of the temple has a collection of some valuable Buddhist scriptures like “Tibetan-language Chinese Tripitaka”, “Dunhuang Tibetan-language Tripitaka”, “Fangshan inscription” and some of the classic books of the Qing Dynasty rarely seen in China.
In recent years, Qianming Temple has received hundreds of foreign friends from America, England, and Canada and so on. Large Buddhism activities are held in Qianming Temple with over 10,000 participants. The Buddhism Association of Guiyang city is also situated here. It is the place to carry forward Buddha dharma and the culture of Buddhism and to bond Buddhists at home and abroad, which makes it the best place for tourists to know about the culture of Buddhism.
