Just one day after a red tide near Longfengtou Bathing Beach disappeared on May 22, new red tides emerged in waters in other areas in Pingtan.

The red tides were found near Zhongmen village in Suao town, Liushui town and Dongxiang township, covering a total area of about 20 square kilometers, said the Pingtan aquatic product technology promotion department on May 23.

Weather conditions will remain stable in the following days with no strong winds, which will help the red tides linger, the department warned.

Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom (large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms) caused by a few species of dinoflagellates that take on a red or brown color. It is usually found in coastal areas. It is sometimes toxic to fish life and, through accumulation in shellfish, to humans.
