Gong Qinggai, the secretary of the Party working committee and the director of the administration committee of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, paid a visit to Tsinghua University and its Taiwan Research Institute and met Deng Wei, the deputy secretary of the Party committee of Tsinghua University, on March 14.

They talked about cross-Straits cooperation in Pingtan and the opening-up and development of the pilot zone.

Gong Qinggai expressed gratitude to the support given by Tsinghua University on behalf of the Party working committee and the administration committee and presented in detail the opening-up and development of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

After three years of effort, Pingtan has established a foundation and conditions for cross-Straits cooperation and entered into a new stage of development with the implementation of the General Development Plan of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

At present, apart from its policies, capital, technology and projects, Pingtan is also in need of a large number of high-level professionals. Pingtan hopes to cooperate with Tsinghua University in talent training, technology innovation and project introduction to support the opening-up and development of the pilot zone.

Pingtan also hopes that the cooperation can utilize their own advantages in education to establish an excellent research institute in Pingtan, said Deng Qinggai.

Tsinghua University has been in cooperation with Fujian province for a long time and both sides have great cooperation foundations for talent exchange, cadre training and the commercialization of research findings.

The opening-up and development of Pingtan is a national strategy, and the pilot zone plays a leading role in cross-Straits cooperation. Tsinghua University is willing to provide Pingtan with support in technological cooperation, commercialization of research findings and talent training in order to play a more active role in the opening-up and development of Pingtan, said Deng Wei.

Gong Qinggai also talked with Liu Zhentao, the director of the Taiwan Research Institute. Both sides discussed the topic of carrying out comprehensive experiments in cross-Straits integration of economy, culture and society. Gong hopes that the Taiwan Research Institute of Tsinghua University could cooperate with the National Tsinghua University in Taiwan to set up science and research centers to provide more talent for the opening-up and development of Pingtan.

In the afternoon, Gong Qinggai was invited to give a speech in the Mingde Forum of Tsinghua University themed "Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone: Establishing a Common Home across the Straits". More than 200 college students from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University and Beijing Forestry University attended the forum.
