A huge Thangka portraying the "Buddha of Measureless Light" was unveiled on the first day of the start of Thangka worship at Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, the second-largest city in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region, July 18, 2016.

The second day and third day will show "Buddha Shakyamuni" and "Strong Buddha" respectively. Thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist embroidery.

The Tashilhunpo monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second-highest ranking Lama in the Gelupa sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Founded in 1447, the monastery carries high prestige among pilgrims. Many monks also revere this sacred place, for the unique way of learning sutras.

Located on a hill, the name of the monastery, Tashilhunpo, means "heap of glory".
