Al-Jazeera journalist gets assurance about extradition

By Agencies in Berlin, Germany | China Daily | Updated: 2015-06-23 07:38

No one will be extradited from Germany if they face the death penalty, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said on Monday when asked about an Al-Jazeera journalist, Ahmed Mansour, who has been remanded in custody in Berlin at Egypt's request.

"I don't think one can say this loudly enough: Of course, nobody will be extradited from Germany who risks being sentenced to death abroad," Martin Schaefer told a news conference on Monday.

Mansour, 52, a well-known journalist with the Qatar-based broadcaster's Arabic service, was detained at Berlin's Tegel Airport on Saturday on an Egyptian arrest warrant, his lawyer, Fazli Altin, said. Mansour, who holds dual Egyptian-British nationality, was trying to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha, the station reported.
