By Cao Yin | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-08-14 19:31

Recording residents' fingerprints on second-generation identity cards will be extended across China to prevent forgery and fraud, the Ministry of Public Security has announced.

More than 16,000 police stations have asked residents applying for new ID cards to record their fingerprints. The project will cover the whole country by the end of 2013, the ministry said.

There have been recent reports of stolen cards being sold online.
