One-third fireworks in Zhejiang are substandard

By Wang Zhenghua in Shanghai | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-02-06 17:31

The latest inspection has found that about one-third of fireworks produced or sold in Zhejiang province are substandard.

In the campaign launched before Spring Festival, China’s biggest holiday, quality inspectors collected 198 batches of sample products and found 66 of them failed to meet quality standards and may cause injuries.

Inspectors found some fireworks had improper signs on packages, lacked backup fuses, contained excessive explosives or banned materials, along with 11 other violations of safety rules.

The inspection showed the quality of fireworks is worrisome, the provincial quality watchdog said.

The condition is worsened by the fact that apart from products sold via legal channels, smuggled fireworks without passing safety tests by the watchdog are circulating in the markets of Zhejiang, it said.

Despite only two companies interested and allowed to produce fireworks in the province, residents of Zhejiang are fond of the pyrotechnic devices during festive occasions and that forces the province to buy products from 216 companies located outside the province.
