Japan ready to offer help to landslide-hit China

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan offered his sympathy to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao over the fatal landslide in northwestern Gansu province, saying Japan is ready to provide assistance to help rehabiliate the region.

"I offer my condolences to the victims and express my heartfelt sympathy to those who have been hit by the landslide," Kan noted. "I pray for an early recovery and am ready to provide support."

By Sunday night, the massive mudslide had killed 127 people and injured 88. An estimated 1,300 people are missing.
