Two killed at Shanghai rail construction sites

SHANGHAI  -- Two people died here on Thursday in two separate accidents at rail construction sites, local officials said.

Smoke rises from a construction site of subway line 11 in Shanghai, economic hub of China, Jan. 8, 2009. The fire broke out 20 meters underground at the construction site, killing one worker and injuring six others, according to the fire brigade. [Xinhua]

A crane driver died at 10:30 a.m. after the crane overturned at the city's Line 9 urban rail, which is under construction, said an official with the local work safety bureau.

Just an hour later, a fire broke out 20 meters underground at a construction site on Line 11, killing one worker and injuring six others, according to the fire brigade.

The fire was put out at about 1 p.m.. The injured workers have been hospitalized.

Authorities are investigating the causes of the accidents.
