Macao police arrested a local resident suspected of cheating more than 95,000
yuan ($12,217) out of a Guangzhou businessman in an investment scam.
The suspect, surnamed Au, is accused of soliciting fake investments totaling
25 million yuan ($3.2 million) in the business of a garden product supplier in
Zhongshan, Guangdong.
The garden products supplier in Guangzhou was first told to give Au's
"lawyers" 20,000 yuan ($2,572) to register a company in Hong Kong. He gave Au
75,000 yuan ($9,645) more for a deposit and lawyer's fee when they signed the
contract in late December. He was then given a check for 25 million yuan ($3.2
million), which bounced.
