China's output of crude steel increased 2.4 percent year-on-year in the first two months of 2009 after mills consumed all the high-priced iron ore that they bought last year, according to the country's top industrial official.

Daily steel output increased 7.9 percent in February compared to January, Li Yizhong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, told reporters at a press conference during the annual session of the National People's Congress on Tuesday.

He attributed the positive signs to the stimulus plans from the government and efforts from the industries.
