Disciplines from Chinese universities rank among the global top three

Disciplines from prestigious Chinese universities have ranked among the global top three, according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject released on Wednesday.

The Chinese mainland placed third globally, with 1,230 subjects being listed, trailing only the United States and the United Kingdom. Peking University's two disciplines — Linguistics, and Classics and Ancient History, along with Tsinghua University's two — Art History, and Environmental Sciences, stood out among the world's best.

Among institutions in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the University of Hong Kong secured the most top-200 placements, with 55 subjects on the list. Meanwhile, the Chinese University of Hong Kong demonstrated strong improvement, with 43 subjects rising in ranking.

Fudan University showed remarkable progress, with 46 subjects being listed, ranking first among universities on the Chinese mainland in terms of the total number of subjects listed.

The 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject analyzed more than 1,700 universities across 100 countries and regions, covering 55 academic disciplines.

The Chinese mainland saw an upward trend, with 60 percent of its ranked subjects improving, while only 2 percent declined. Nine percent remained stable, and 358 new subject entries were added.

Chinese universities saw comprehensive progress across all the five QS evaluation metrics, with particularly strong performance in academic reputation. Overall, the Chinese mainland recorded a 64 percent improvement in this category, ranking third globally.

The China University of Geosciences led the world in academic reputation for Geology, coming 11th overall in the subject.
