Festive furry feasts

What do puppies have for their Chinese New Year's Eve dinner?
As more young people adopt pets, the pet market has become increasingly diverse. According to Jiemian, a Chinese media outlet, a pet store in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, introduced a "Puppy Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner" package priced at 168 yuan ($23.17) per dog.
The set, which includes 10 dishes, quickly sold out once it was announced, leaving many pet owners unable to secure a spot.
In addition to treating their pets to special meals at restaurants, many owners also purchase gift boxes to celebrate the New Year with their furry companions. These gift boxes, ranging from a few dozen yuan to 500 yuan, typically contain a variety of items such as main dishes, soups, desserts, and snacks.
Pet gift boxes have also become popular as social gifts, with pet owners buying them not just for their own pets but also for friends and family members with pets.
As young people's spending habits evolve, the pet market has seen rapid growth.
According to data from the China Pet Industry Association, the pet economy continued to expand in 2024, surpassing a market size of 300 billion yuan.
