The 45-year-old China-US Science and Technology Agreement was recently extended for another five years, as agreed by the two sides. The international community has generally welcomed the renewal of the agreement, believing that Sino-US scientific research cooperation is not only in the interests of the people of the two countries, but will also promote the two sides to cope with common global challenges.

Over the 45 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, the two countries have strived to be partners not opponents. The common interests of China and the US have long been deeply intertwined. Mutual benefit and win-win results are the essential characteristics of the relationship between the two countries.

The bilateral trade exceeds $660 billion, and the more than 70,000 US companies in China have a combined annual profit of $50 billion, and the US' exports to China alone support 930,000 jobs in US enterprises. Qualcomm and Intel's revenue in the Chinese market account for two-thirds and one-fourth of their respective global revenues, 80 percent of Apple's 200 major suppliers are in China, and Tesla alone accounted for 28.6 percent of China's new energy vehicle exports last year.

Both sides should give play to their complementary advantages, extend the list of cooperation areas, and enlarge the cooperation cake, so that their respective successes become opportunities rather than challenges for each other, and the development of both sides becomes a boost rather than an obstacle to each other.

China always maintains the stability and continuity of its policy toward the US. While its resolve to resolutely safeguard the country's sovereignty, security and development interests remains unchanged, so too does its desire for a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship remain unchanged. Its commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation as principles for handling China-US relations also remains unchanged. And its willingness to carry forward the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples remains unchanged.

The one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques are the political foundations for bilateral relations and they should be strictly observed. China's red lines in different fields should not be challenged. These are the most important guardrails for Sino-US relations.

China and the US are great countries, and Sino-US cooperation is a great cause. The US should work with China to find the right way for the two countries with different civilizations, systems and paths to coexist peacefully and develop together.
