Dancing their way around the nation
At the finals of the 2024 Nike National University Street Dance Competition on Saturday in Chengdu, Sichuan province, the FDC dance troupe from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts emerged victorious, clinching the championship title.
Since kicking off in October, the competition has drawn 5,500 dancers from 240 college dance clubs around the country, injecting cultural and creativity into campus street dance, furthering the exchange and integration of street dance culture at universities.
It was also a platform for students to express themselves and convey their ideas. Many thought-provoking pieces emerged in regional competitions. For example, the IDK dance club from the China Agricultural University, paid homage to the dreams of Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, and the JUMP club from the Shanghai International Studies University used the stage to reflect on protecting women's safety and rights.
The young dancers creatively choreographed and narrated their reflections on the world and society, elevating street dance beyond mere physical movement.
The elite dance group V-VIBE was also invited to engage with dancers on-site, delivering a Cypher session alongside a street dance demonstration that encompassed a variety of dance styles.
On Dec 8, Nike also organized exclusive master classes, providing a platform for university dancers to learn, exchange ideas, and enhance their skills. Elite dancers Zhang Wenjing and Li Chunlin graced the event, sharing their techniques and insights with the students.
