Green Pecem, a 77,000 dead-weight-ton multi-purpose pulp carrier, or MPC, has been delivered to its customer recently in Dalian, Liaoning province.

Its maiden voyage will head to southern China to load new energy vehicles before sailing to countries in Latin America.

"The vessel is mainly used for transporting paper pulp. However, to enhance operational efficiency, our company independently designed a system that meets the conditions required for transporting new energy vehicles," said Liu Yu, deputy manager of the material management department at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) Co Ltd, or CHI (Dalian), a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co.

With the "foldable car-specific frame" equipped with infrared temperature imaging devices and a one-to-one real-time temperature monitoring and warning system, the vessel can carry nearly 4,000 cars, significantly boosting its utility, he said.

The multi-purpose vessel can also carry various other cargo, including grain, iron ore, high-speed trains, wind power equipment and large machinery, as well as oversized and heavy steel pipe structures.

Together with Green Pecem, another pulp carrier built for CMB Financial Leasing — Green Suape — was also named on Nov 20. The two vessels are the 12th and 13th in a series of 77,000 dwt MPC constructed by CHI (Dalian).

The vessels each measure 225 meters in length, 32.26 meters in width and 21 meters in depth. Their cargo holds are well-sealed and dry to ensure the quality and safety of pulp during transport.

The first delivery can be traced back to Dec 22, when Green Santos built by CHI (Dalian) was delivered and named, and formally handed over to COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers for operation.

The 77,000 dwt MPC not only improves loading capacity, but also further improves environmental protection performance.

The pollutant nitrogen oxide emission of this series of vessels meets Tier III standards, while noise meets the requirements of the green ecological ship specification, which was effected by the China Classification Society.

The latest, Green Pecem, was delivered under the supervision of Dalian Customs.

Zhang Fuhui, head of a Dalian Customs branch, said that shipbuilding involves long production cycles, numerous material batches and a wide variety of components. Measures have been taken to support healthy development of the local shipbuilding industry.
