FM: Taiwan question, Ukraine issue not comparable
State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that the Taiwan question and the Ukraine issue are different in nature and are not comparable at a press conference on the sidelines of the fifth session of the 13th National People's Congress.
"The most fundamental difference is Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and the Taiwan question completely belongs to China's domestic affairs, while the Ukraine issue is a dispute between Russia and Ukraine," he said.
Wang criticized the double standards held by some people who repeatedly stress sovereignty on the Ukraine issue while undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity in terms of the Taiwan question.
He stressed Taiwan's future and hope lie in the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and reunification with the mainland, not in counting on the empty promises of external forces.
"The scheme to use Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail and Taiwan will eventually return to the embrace of the motherland," he added.
