Like Liu, many residents in Longtu village have rid themselves of poverty thanks to the rapid development of rural industries. With the development of industries such as photovoltaic power generation, fir trees and fruit and vegetable planting in recent years, villagers' incomes have grown significantly.

In addition, the village's collective income also increased. "In the past, the village-level government didn't have money. Nowadays, we make about 150,000 yuan each year via the local photovoltaic industry, allowing us to do things to benefit our people," said Wu Jiusheng, head of the Chenguang township government.

During this time, Wu and officials of Longtu village noticed a small group of impoverished households which lacked the drive for poverty alleviation. Since aid and supporting policies are not enough for villagers to achieve long-lasting poverty relief goals, they must be inspired to move towards prosperity.

To solve the problem, Longtu village decided to set exemplary figures of poverty alleviation and encouraged all villagers to follow them. The village government also established a points-based system - villagers who make contributions in aspects including poverty alleviation, industry development and environmental protection are rewarded with certain points, which can be used to exchange daily commodities. These measures are proven to significantly motivate villagers.
