Turning vision into reality
President Xi Jinping's speech "Turn our vision into reality" at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday has revealed outstanding features of the new industrial revolution, offered valuable proposals on future cooperation among the BRICS members, and pointed out how BRICS can play a bigger role in the adjustment of the global governance system.
The prospects of BRICS in the next 10 years largely hinges on whether they will be able to consolidate the foundation of their partnership-pragmatic cooperation-in the face of a new round of revolution in technology and industry that has been reshaping the mode of production and the way people live. The BRICS members must carefully plan and carry out their cooperation so as to seize the initiative in this technological revolution.
China has always been an active supporter and leader in promoting BRICS cooperation. It promoted the drawing up and implementation of the first action plan for BRICS cooperation on innovation set out at the BRICS Summit in Xiamen in September last year.
The four proposals Xi made in his speech this time-strengthen economic cooperation, safeguard international peace and security, deepen human and cultural exchanges and build a close partnership network-have drawn up the framework for BRICS cooperation over the next decade, and if implemented, will inject new and sustainable vitality into the bloc.
The proposals have won recognition and support from leaders of the other BRICS members. It can be seen as the group's stance to the mounting external challenges it faces, most of which stem from some developed countries' hegemonism, protectionism and unilateralism.
Facing the challenges, the BRICS members are united as one and are concentrating their efforts to safeguard fairness and multilateralism in international rules.
BRICS growth over the past decade has already shown that how a concept can evolve into shared commitment, and over the next decade the bloc will turn into reality their vision of shared security, common prosperity, inclusive development and a clean environment.
